 “It is time for American energy policy to be dictated by the consumers and not the oil and gas industry.” In 2006, Representative Kirsten Gillibrand won an upset victory on a wave of grassroots support, and over the past two years she has worked diligently in Congress to improve the lives of her constituents in New York’s 20th district. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee and Armed Services Committee, she helped secure rural infrastructure funding and spearheaded efforts to ensure that American troops receive the equipment they deserve. Representative Gillibrand is also deeply concerned with the needs of military families in these tough economic times and believes these individuals must have increased health, housing, and payment benefits. She has also been an unyielding advocate for restoring fiscal sanity in Washington and has introduced legislation that would require the federal government balance the budget every year.
After her reelection, Representative Gillibrand will continue to promote her populist platform by cutting taxes for middle class families and small businesses, standing up for our troops and veterans, promoting sensible energy solutions, and providing quality, affordable health care for all Americans. Representative Gillibrand believes in open and honest government and she will continue to provide the honest leadership that our country so desperately needs. She was the first Member of Congress to post her daily schedule online and among the first to publicly release and publish all earmark requests that she made on behalf of her district. Representative Gillibrand was born and raised in Upstate New York, and currently lives with her husband, Jonathan, their four-year-old son, Theodore, and baby Henry in Greenport, New York. A magna cum laude graduate from Dartmouth College, Representative Gillibrand went on to receive her law degree at the University of California at Los Angeles Law School, and served as a law clerk on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
